With the wealth of information available online in modern times, it only makes sense for teachers to integrate online technology in the classroom. This can be in the form of simulations, which provide a digital platform where students can explore phenomena. Simulations "make the invisible visible...include the visual models that experts use to aid their thinking, animate those models, and provide interactive controls and measuring tools" (Perkins 2010). The simulated lab serves as a digital rendition of physical lab bench, allowing students to work in the controlled (and very sterile) digital environement.
Serendip is a collection of such educational resources including simulations, activities and readings. The links provide students with supplies to enhance their understanding, review material, or just explore a subject in greater depth than the classroom hours had time for.
Serendip was created by Serendip Studios, from Bryn Mawr College. Serendip Studios's main page can be accessed by the home link in the upper right hand corner of any site. This blog though, will be focusing on the science aspect of the studio's work (that is, any of the links found under "Science" of the Studio home page).
This blog focuses on the links provided on the Interactive Biology page of the site, with reference to other pages and other sites.
I love the Perkins quote, I think that embodies the idea of EdTech perfectly. Your overview page is nice and simple, although I a few more facts about technology in the classroom in general would be useful, too.
